Common Raven — Stay Away From My Nest!

Common Ravens are fiercely protective parents. I didn’t need to be reminded of that but I was reminded anyway, when I recently drove past a ravens’ nest. The nest is in a large tree about 20-30 meters away from the edge of a farm road. It has been occupied by ravens during their breeding season for at least the last two years.

A few days ago I stopped on the road, adjacent to the nest, to see whether there were hatchlings there. Both parents were at the nest and they reacted immediately to my presence. One of them flew a few meters to a nearby elevated perch and cursed at me in fluent raven.

It’s not my intent to disturb nesting birds of any species. I made a handful of images and drove on. One thing I know about these ravens and that is that the next time they see my vehicle their reaction will be more vehement than it was. Ravens, aside from being protective, are highly intelligent and have extraordinary memories.

I thought Ravens always nested on cliffs, canyon walls etc. Apparently not.
