Burrowing Owls — A Difference of Opinion

It’s breeding season for Burrowing Owls and they’ve become very active recently. I’m accumulating a fair number of images of them.

Here’s an image that I made a few days ago. The owls seem to be of different mind. The one on the right is vocalizing, its mate appears to be bored.

I’m not sure which of the birds in this couple is the male and which is the female. Females tend to have slightly darker plumage than males. The bird on the right may have plumage that is just a whisker darker than the plumage of the bird on the left, so I’ll hazard a guess and say that she’s the female. But it’s just a guess.

Image made with a Canon R5, Canon EF 400mm f4 DO II lens+Canon EF 1.4x telextender, M setting (auto ISO), ISO 800, f11 @ 1/500.
