I photographed a Cactus Wren a few days ago as it sang to greet the sunrise.

The Cactus Wren is Arizona’s state bird and rightfully so, in my opinion. It is a true desert dweller, a common a sight in the Sonoran Desert. Take a walk in the desert in the hour or so after sunrise and the odds of seeing Cactus Wrens are very high.

It is omnivorous and highly opportunistic. It will eat just about anything and seems to be always on the lookout for a meal. Cactus Wrens often forage as mated pairs and it’s common to see a pair perching on the same bush or low tree. I’ve found Cactus Wrens to be less intimidated by a human’s presence than are many other species. It’s possible to approach one of these birds fairly closely.

A Cactus Wren is a noisy bird. It has a loud call that sounds a bit like pebbles being shaken in a metal container. It’s not unusual to hear one of these birds before one sees it.
