About a week ago I posted an image of a pair of Giant Mesquite Bugs apparently being affectionate towards each other. Well, the pair featured tonight (which may be the same pair I photographed last week) has consummated their love and are in the process of making the next generation of mesquite bugs.
There are many species of insects whose sexes look pretty much alike. That’s not the case with these bugs. The male, on the right of the image, is redder than the female and his body is a bit more slender than hers. He also has oversized hind legs. I can’t explain these differences, that’s just the way these bugs are. I find them to be pretty weird to begin with, so what’s a few more odd characteristics here or there?
